Classic Tier Reserve Tier Limited Release Wines

2005 Elements, Napa/Sonoma County

  The foundation of this wine is from our Alexander Valley mountain-side vineyard, our Carneros Estate Tempranillo and a Carneros Syrah vineyard. Carneros is a cool climate area which produces Syrah and Tempranillo with spice and leather characteristics. The Alexander Valley vineyard is a relatively warmer region that provides suppleness and forward aromatic berry fruit. This wine is the melding of these world-class vineyards. Extensive shoot, leaf and fruit thinning in the vineyard ensures that we have even and full ripening.

This wine is a blend of the major grape varietals of three of the Old World’s most famous wine regions – Bordeaux, Rhone and Rioja. Following hand-harvesting, the grapes were de-stemmed and gently split open. Fermentations were conducted in a combination of open-top vessels with a punch-down device and closed tanks with gentle cap irrigators. Several types of yeast were used for both inoculated and uninoculated fermenting. Post fermentation extended maceration was used when appropriate to build body and structure. Most lots were pressed directly to barrel, and malolactic fermentations finished in barrel. The wines were racked three times in their first year and once during their second year to mature the wine.

Tasting Notes
This wine is brimming with lively black currant, raspberry and blueberries enveloped in a spicy bouquet of cinnamon, clove, vanilla, nutmeg and faint hints of smoked meat. The flavor is true to the aromas and the texture is silky and supple. This wonderful blend of fruit, spice and silk dances and lingers in your mouth. The acid balance and slight dryness of the tannin on the finish indicate this wine has the structure to age gracefully for several years.
